Tea in Books and Films

The Chronicles of Fairacre
The first volume in this series, Village School, and the other volumes that follow, entice us to heave a sigh of contentment and settle back with our cup of tea. Written by Dora Saint. These charming books transport us to the English village of Fairacre. Each engaging tale of life in this fictional village is an irresistible combination of sharp wit, close observation, distinctive characters and the real concerns of daily life, graced with the love of nature. The delights and beauty of a simple village life are created through the eyes of the main character, Miss Reed, who is a respected teacher in the village school. She is a practical problem solver and tells of her life with all the interesting and varied characters that populate Fairacre. The small details described bring cheer and solace to the reader. Hearing song birds, discovering rose buds on a walk, setting the tea table with a cloth edged in delicate hand-made lace are perhaps what we long for in our busy work-a-day lives. Originally written over sixty years ago, the books have continued appeal. Never having been allowed out of print and having garnering millions of readers in many countries, the stories bring us time to dwell in this enchanting village of our hearts. Take time to settle in with a quilt, a cup of tea and Miss Reed. Your autumn will be enriched for it.

Note: In the next few months we would like to plan a tea with Miss Reed's Fairacre as the theme.  Let us know what you think.

The No. 1 Ladies detective agency
There isn't a lot of grit in this detective story, and it isn't a typical hard-boiled mystery novel. Written by Alexander McCall Smith and set in Botswana, the story overflows with the joys of life and exudes an all-embracing spirit. The main character, Precious Ramotswe, a kind hearted "woman of traditional build" with a penchant for mysteries and bush tea, heads the first and possibly the only ladies detective agency in Africa. Solving her cases with wisdom, traditional values and lots of love, she takes the reader on a pleasant journey. A light and easy read, this book will be the highlight of your summer.

FILMS:
Jill Scott leads in the HBO 2009 adaptation of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. This is as good an adaptation as any Ladies lover could wish.  Be ready to be engulfed in charm, humor and the beauty of Africa.  Available on DVD.

We are excited about our  summer plans and we hope you are too. Our monthly teas are $21.95 per guest,  by reservation only.
